Having a wonderful and relaxing Memorial Day weekend. Today my husband and I invited 8 of our dear friends over for a BBQ. Great food, company and the weather was beautiful.

I've been thinking about how lucky I am lately. Sure I have problems, who doesn't? But I think it really depends upon how you "hold" those ideas. Problems are really ideas, or a story we tell ourselves about reality. I'm not happy about my mother's aging, dementia and the difficulties this presents for my life. Nor am I happy about the knee replacement surgery I'm having later this month, on and on and on.

Ok, so what am I going to do about these things? My choice is to enjoy the other aspects of my life, good food, my friends and family, my beautiful home and garden and my 2 wonderful dogs.

What does this have to do with nutrition, conscious eating and the other things I usually write about? I think that remaining conscious of what's real and true is my life includes not just food, but all these other aspects of my life as well. I can CHOOSE to look at my life as half empty, or half full.

I do have issues with my health that affect what I eat. I can CHOOSE to be unhappy about this, or I can CHOOSE to eat in the way that's healthiest for me, and enjoy all the wonderful things I CAN eat.
New Wellness for Me: Health & wellness, fitness, and attuned eating

Last night, I had a great time with some friends from college. Oddly enough, there was a time in my life when I may not have even gone. Last night would have been an “event” for me; something that I had to prepare for. I’m not talking about a new outfit, I mean a whole new me… because back then, the old me was never “good enough”.

Let’s make this simple… an event called for the “diet-down” and the weeks leading up to it typically went like this:

You need to lose weight!
Diet more, eat less! … time is running short!!!
Work harder, exercise more!
If you don’t lose weight, you don’t deserve to go.

Possible scenarios? Oh yeah, these were great:

If I “allowed” myself to go I wasn’t fully present. I felt self-conscious and preoccupied. I played the body-check game and compared myself to my friends. Someone thinner or more fit than me meant I didn’t try hard enough. And, of course, dieting down usually meant I’d gain the weight back (or even more) when the event was over.
If I didn’t lose “enough”, or even worse I gained weight (typical when I pressured myself to lose)… I couldn’t go at all. Missing good times in my life because of the scale, oh yes this makes sense.

Is it all worth it? Life goes by quickly. Watching my children grow from helpless infants to independent young adults in what seems to be a blink of an eye helped me realize this. I began to notice what I was missing. I started questioning what all this worrying and obsessing over my weight was gaining me. My thoughts began to shift. I learned to appreciate myself for who I am, from the inside out first. There is much more to me than my jean size. Focusing on the positive things I have to offer took the focus away from my appearance. I felt happier and freer. I realized I need to respect who I am right now, in this very moment… not the person I thought I needed to be. It finally dawned on my how much of my life was passing me by! I had a choice. I could continue on this self-destructive path that never left me feeling good about myself or I could begin to accept me for who I am and enjoy what my life had to offer me.

I have a challenge for you. Think of 3 influential people in your life; individuals whom you admire and look up to. Why are they important you? What characteristics make them special? Do these qualities have anything to do with their weight? No matter what your size, you matter. You have things that only you can offer. There are people in your life who depend on you and look up to you. By putting your life on hold or not being fully present in it, you cheat yourself and those around you from getting the very best of you! You can’t enjoy life if you don’t allow yourself to experience it!

I did buy a new outfit for dinner last night but that was the extent of my “preparation”. Instead of stressing, I found myself looking forward to being able to share a night with some special people. We remembered (or at least tried to remember LOL) the fun times we had, shared stories about our families and our lives. We had many laughs and a lot of fun. And the best part, I was there, enjoying every bit of it :)Ellen Glovskyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13897784950456858897noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5882190218301912832.post-34107613928315790532012-04-28T17:13:00.001-04:002012-04-28T17:13:43.948-04:00<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml>

How To Raise A Healthy
Eater

It’s really tempting these days to classify foods as “good
vs bad”, or “healthy vs. unhealthy”. As we Registered Dietitians say, “All foods
fit”. The distinction is how foods are
used in the diet.

A useful way to think about this is “nutrient density”, which refers to nutrients per calorie. For example, compare a fresh apple to apple
pie. A fresh apple has about 80 calories,
lots of vitamins and minerals, and very little fat. The sugar in apples comes naturally. The average slice of apple pie has about 400
calories, and some of the vitamins and minerals, but more sugar and fat than
the fresh fruit. So the pie is less nutrient dense than the fresh
apple. If you choose foods that are more nutrient dense more of the time,
you can create a “healthy” eating plan for you and your child.

Another way to raise a healthy eater is to encourage your
child to respond to physical hunger and fullness signals. We all have these physical signals; we are
born with them. Our society does a great
job of encouraging us to avoid responding appropriately to them. Food is everywhere, and we are encouraged by
advertising and social influences to eat at all times, regardless of whether or
not we are hungry. Our children learn not to pay attention, as
they watch what we do.

Our job should be to help our children learn to distinguish
between hunger and other feelings, such as boredom, hurt, or anger, or feeling
just plain happy. Some people, adults
and kids, just know when they are hungry and only eat then. But most of us eat when food is available, and
that’s almost always. Many people easily
confuse emotions with hunger, and we can help our children (and ourselves!) make these distinctions. When you are hungry, physically hungry, eat. When you are NOT hungry do something else!
Ellen Glovskyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13897784950456858897noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5882190218301912832.post-16781619445459710982012-03-14T12:15:00.003-04:002012-04-28T17:14:39.796-04:00You MatterFrom my colleague, Janine Quigley. This is a terrific post on Intuitive Eating

You Matter

And the best part, I was there, enjoying every bit of it :)
She was of "normal" weight, athletic and very
comfortable in her body. She married a man 10 years her junior, and was
very proud that she kept up their active lifestyle.

Over several months, she began to have joint pain and fatigue and many other
symptoms. She was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, and it was advancing
quickly. The meds she was given included steroids and others that caused
weight gain, which she found extremely upsetting. Over this time, she had
changed her diet, which was quite healthy, and did not contain too many
calories.

She came to me to lose weight. We discussed her diet at length, and I
conducted a computerized nutrient analysis of her detailed food records.
Her diet was very appropriate, and if she were to decrease her calorie
intake, she would not be receiving adequate nutrients. As we talked, I told
her that steroids have the side effect of weight gain, and that for some
people the weight gained is not lost, at least not at first. She was no
longer on steroids, but was sure she would need these meds again for acute
flares of pain.

We discussed her goals in terms of her illness, which is now chronic. As we
worked together, discussing her goals and values at this point in her life,
she realized that she could learn to live with the new, higher weight. When I ask what they mean, they tell me they eat breakfast at 7AM and then are hungry again before lunch, at 10 or 11:00. They are unhappy about this, and think there is something wrong with them.
Not so! Humans all around the world eat every 3-4 hours. We need fuel at those intervals. The only way to avoid this is to eat high fat foods most of the time. Fat stays in the stomach longer than the other nutrients that provide calories, carbohydrate and protein. I don’t recommend eating high fat foods regularly. So, what is a person to do??
The way to manage this “problem” is to plan to eat every 3-4 hours. This means eating 4 or 5 times per day. Some people don’t like the idea of “snacking”, since that has a bad connotation to them. So, call it something else. My colleague and sports nutritionist, Nancy Clark (http://www.nancyclarkrd.com/) , talks about having a “second lunch” a few hours after the first. You can divide the lunch meal in two, or just have an additional smaller meal at 3 or 4:00.
Here’s another example. You eat lunch at 1PM, leave work at 5 and have a 90 minute commute home. You come home famished and eat everything you see when you walk in the door. Is there something wrong with you? No! You should not expect your body to wait for food till you get home. You need food, perhaps when you are leaving the office. But, won’t this be just extra calories? Yes, and no. Most people find they will actually eat less in the long run by keeping their bodies well fed and not starvedEllen Glovskyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13897784950456858897noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5882190218301912832.post-15481285541162313982011-12-14T22:38:00.001-05:002011-12-14T22:39:32.240-05:00What to eat???What to eat when I still want to eat but it's bedtime and I'm NOT HUNGRY?! Nothing. Go to bed. Food doesn't even taste good when I eat and I'm not hungry. This isn't about food, it's something else, but what? What is the emotion? I think I'm just sad the chance to eat this day is over. I love food.Ellen Glovskyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13897784950456858897noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5882190218301912832.post-65528360177066796652011-08-07T10:34:00.005-04:002011-08-08T10:43:14.396-04:00Can Knowing When you are Full Really Work?In recent talk, Dr. Brian Wansink, a consumer psychologist, discussed the idea that dieters don't need WILLPOWER, just use smaller plates and glasses. He also said that people should keep "unhealthy" foods out of the line of sight, and healthier foods in view.

Dr. Wansink believes that we can't rely on our hunger and fullness signals to tell us when to stop eating. He says that there are just too many stimuli and influences on us to keep eating even after we are full.

So, the idea here is to control the things that stimulate us in our environment, rather than relying on internal signals. I have 2 competing thoughts about this.

First, we should, in theory at least, be able to tune in to physical signals about hunger and fullness and stop eating when we are full and satisfied. The other side of this argument is that humans are "hard wired" to eat when food is available. For most of human history, we lived through cycles of feast and famine, and so eating when food was available was a positive trait or thing to do. So, stopping eating when one was full would be to our disadvantage from an evolutionary point of view.

I believe that we must balance these 2 sides of our nature. Stopping when we are full may just be too, too much for the "system" and it might become overwhelmed by all the food available in our environment these days. Perhaps a way to manage our food environment is to do what Dr. Wansink suggests, using smaller plates, cups and glasses.

A very good compromise, I think!Ellen Glovskyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13897784950456858897noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5882190218301912832.post-79015081460976696852011-07-25T22:33:00.002-04:002011-07-25T22:35:48.072-04:00Comfort FoodsRecently, as my life is quite stressful, I've been really craving smooth, creamy foods, my most comfort foods. When all the food on your plate is gone? When you have certain physical feelings of "fullness"?

This is a very important question. If we recommend that people stop eating when they are "full" but they don't have a good barometer giving them signals that make sense, how would they know when to stop eating.

Ever notice that food tastes better when you are hungry? And stops tasting so fabulous when you are getting full? That's a really good indication that you are full and perhaps even satisfied.

What does SATISFACTION with food mean to you?Ellen Glovskyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13897784950456858897noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5882190218301912832.post-74817806773181275492011-05-20T22:14:00.002-04:002011-05-20T22:19:07.654-04:00Hunger and FullnessI had a conversation today with a client, who said that since she's changed her diet to one that is lower in fat and higher in fiber, she experiences a "different kind of fullness". I asked her to explain.

She said that when she ate a "meat heavy" diet, she felt full a lot of the time, and really liked that feeling. With much less meat, and other fatty foods, she gets full, but it has a different quality.

How interesting! Wouldn't you think that full is full?

I think that when we aren't eating what we REALLY want, we can be physically full, but not SATISFIED. There's a difference between full, and SATISFIED. For me, satisfied has several dimensions, physical, mental and spiritual or psychological. If you "fill up" just one of these, say the physical, the others just might not be satisfied. This might explain my client's observation that the fullness she feels on a lower fat diet isn't the same. This might be OK with her, or it might not.Ellen Glovskyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13897784950456858897noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5882190218301912832.post-49564409031713166912011-05-20T09:02:00.000-04:002011-05-20T09:03:50.459-04:00Name that Veggie!Name That Veggie Quiz. One aspect is to influence the American Dietetic Association, which is the organization that credentials Registered Dietitians. I've been an RD and ADA member since 1971, and have been proud to be an RD.
I am, however, not at all pleased with the ADA's policy of accepting sponsorship money from corporations that produce foods with very low nutritional value, such as Coca Cola, Hershey's, Pepsi, and others.
I am very pleased that a group of dietitians is forming to challenge ADA on this policy, and I have joined them. I find it embarrassing and I feel ashamed that my professional group would accept money from such corporations.
Actually, as I write this, I am incensed!Ellen Glovskyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13897784950456858897noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5882190218301912832.post-8986797780315077132011-05-06T14:21:00.000-04:002011-05-06T14:22:43.952-04:00International No Diet Day--Celebrated on May 6

International No Diet Day (INDD) is an annual celebration of body acceptance and diversity.
It is observed on May 6 each year.

WHAT IS INDD?
INDD is a day to:

Celebrate the beauty and diversity of ALL our natural sizes & shapes
Affirm everyBODY's right to self-esteem, respect and emotional and physical well-being
Declare a personal one-day moratorium on diet/weight obsession
Learn the facts about weight-loss dieting, health, and body size
Recognize how dieting perpetuates violence against women
Honor the victims of eating disorders and weight-loss surgery
Help end weight discrimination, sizism and fatphobiaEllen Glovskyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13897784950456858897noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5882190218301912832.post-74597707119898119632011-04-17T10:32:00.002-04:002011-04-17T10:37:43.775-04:00The Passover MetaphorAs I prepare for my Passover seder tomorrow, I am thinking about the metaphors for this season.
We are asked to remove the "chametz", or leavened foods from our homes, and only eat unleavened foods for 8 days. There are rituals for removing these foods, and the crumbs and leftovers of them in our cabinets, fridge and storage places.

What would you like to leave behind, with your chametz this season?

Jews were slaves in Egypt, in Hebrew "the narrow place". The theme is freedom from slavery. Where in your life are you still in a "narrow place"? To what are you still enslaved? Money, power, food, control, being right in your relationships? How can you change that, to be more free?Ellen Glovskyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13897784950456858897noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5882190218301912832.post-66131916305881942412011-04-17T10:29:00.003-04:002011-04-17T10:31:01.409-04:00One more pet peeveThe new "Wendy's" ad, for NATURAL CUT FRENCH FRIES WITH SEA SALT. When they try to make foods sound "healthy" they often really mess it up.
The latest is "farm grown" vegetables in products. Where else are vegetable grown?? They are trying to make it sound "organic" or "natural", both buzz words that people think they know. BTW, there's no such thing as "natural", not in a regulatory sense. The word when applied to food products is meaningless!Ellen Glovskyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13897784950456858897noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5882190218301912832.post-58923759522754385632011-04-06T17:37:00.000-04:002011-04-06T17:38:05.480-04:00How Do You Know What to Eat?How Do You Know What To Eat?

In my experience, there are two broad categories of “eaters”. People in the first group know exactly what they really want when they are hungry. If you are one of these people, do you eat what you really want most of the time? If not, what keeps you from eating the foods you really want?

Many people tell me they want to “eat healthy” and the foods they really like aren’t healthy. My professional and personal experience is that many of these people would choose “healthy” foods if they really ate what they prefer most of the time.

So, what is “healthy” food? Many of my clients say, “I had a good day, I ate ‘healthy’ all day”. What does that really mean? For many it means low fat, small portions, lots of fruits and vegetables. As your dietitian, I’d say that’s just fine, but is it what you really wanted? The “best food” is not diet food, it’s what you really want and what food is in your very best interest in terms of health and your satisfaction with what you are eating. I find that cravings for foods we love just get larger when we try to control them!

People in the second category of “eaters” really have no idea what they want to eat most of the time. They may not have thought much about it or have been dieting for so long that they have forgotten what it’s like to eat the foods they really enjoy.

Dieting tells you that what you want is wrong (otherwise you wouldn’t have a weight problem!). So, many chronic dieters become so distant from their physical urges to eat the foods they love that they don’t know what they want. For many chronic dieters, the foods they love have become binge foods, or at least a major treat. In either case, they tend to overeat and lose control when eating the foods they love.

One way to begin to explore the idea of knowing what you really want to eat is to think of these four characteristics of food. The food you choose should be as close to perfect as possible in flavor, texture, color and temperature. I have my comfort foods, some soft and creamy, others crunchy and salty. I've had a number of health issues lately, both for myself and for people I care about, and I admit it, I've been using food for comfort.
To say that I understand how my clients feel is an understatement! This behavior is not good for my health, and yet it's so tempting and even seductive. Watching TV, a "little hungry", I know, let's have this or that. Done now, let's have the next thing. Never waiting till I'm hungry again, as I counsel my clients to do. Not a good plan.
Just thought I'd "rat myself out", to you, dear Blog!Ellen Glovskyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13897784950456858897noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5882190218301912832.post-41871861044250347862011-02-13T14:01:00.003-05:002011-02-13T14:05:50.135-05:00Satisfaction with FoodI think this concept of "satisfaction" when it comes to food is such an interesting idea. What does that mean to you? To your clients?

I think that chronic dieters don't consider how satisfying a food is when they choose what to eat. They think more often of calories, points, or what will make them lose weight, change their body shape, etc.

My personal and professional experience is that when people eat what they REALLY want and do so consciously, they are far more likely to feel satisfied. Surprisingly to many dieters, this does not have to be a "cheat" food. Often foods that are considered "healthy" can be satisfying. It all depends on what you really want to eat when you are hungry. Food choice does not have to be dictated by an external authority such as the diet (or the dietitian!).

You really can eat when you are hungry, eat what you really want and stop when you are full

This helps to make peace with food!Ellen Glovskyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13897784950456858897noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5882190218301912832.post-24640229953754114312011-02-04T09:27:00.003-05:002011-02-04T09:29:43.513-05:00Terrific New Article on Non-DietingA colleague, Judith Matz, has written a wonderful new article on the value of a "non-diet" approach. Our "shape" also changes, with changes in hormones during and after menopause. I have a few people in my life who are different; they aren't gaining weight like the rest of us.

I've watched them and what they do to remain thin or, in some cases, to get even thinner. For most women, this requires an enormous exertion of will, to control food intake and exercise A LOT. Some of these women really like living this way, and others do it because it's one of the (few) ways they have of feeling good about themselves. Others just have a flat out obsession with exercise.

To be clear, there are a few women who remain naturally thin. Their bodies and brains just automatically regulate food intake and they move more naturally. This is, however, the exception.

Many women, menopausal and younger, use regulation of food intake and weight as a means of controlling their internal and external environment. Weight becomes a symbol of how good they are at controlling themselves. It's something that everyone can see and admire.

Imagine that we live in a world where people have the illusion of control because they stay thin!Ellen Glovskyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13897784950456858897noreply@blogger.com0
